Saying Goodbye to the old…

Posted in Random Thoughts at 8:28 am by Administrator

Greetings!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Mine was fantastic! I got to spend time with my family and friends, and I ate waaaay too much!

On Christmas eve I worked until 2pm, and then headed off to my sister’s house where the whole crew was.

My whole family was there except for my sister Sylvia who was in Texas. Isabella was for sure our entertainment this year. She is old enough to open gifts now (a little over a year), walks and speaks her own language. Jess claims it’s Hawaiian.

My brother-in-law got her this go cart thing that actually drives, the rest of us got her just about every toy imaginable, but all she cared about was this one box (it was an art kit – but she just wanted the box), and the animal crackers and these veggie stick things she loves that were in her stocking – which probably equaled about $6 total. Ah, the simple things!

My family exchanged gifts, and then we also did a white elephant gift. I got a box of wheels. The gift I gave was this brand new monster bucket of sidewalk chalk (which I have no clue why the hell I bought it) AND a set of exercise tapes I ordered on TV during my insomniac phase. Good times.

In the middle of all of that I got together with my best friends Genie and Kanya – and managed to squeeze in the Jinglebash!

I don’t even know where to begin with that. For starters, the weather was literally a blizzard. My 30 minute drive took freakin FOUR 1/2 HOURS!!! I felt like I would never get there. I posted my pix in the photo section, plus there is all kinds of backstage stuff on the B96 website (www.b96.com) but I am still floating over the good time I had.

For starters, I can never forsee a time when meeting celebs will get old. I am just as big of a fan as our listeners, if not more – and it’s like I turn around and David Archuleta is standing next to me! I was drinking with Brody Jenner in the VIP Lounge and watching the concert with him! I chatted with Jesse McCartney, and got an unusually warm welcome from Kevin Rudolf! (He called the station the day before and I talked with him. When I introduced myself and asked for a pic, he pulled me on him and ran his fingers thru my hair – AWKWARD!!!) It was so surreal!

The best part of the whole show was Chris Brown and Rihanna. Backstage I just stood there with my mouth open. Rihanna is even more beautiful in person. You see pics of celebs and just assume they’ve been airbrushed to perfection – but she really is that gorgeous and tall! They were super friendly and Chris was throwing snow at her that was on the car that they came in – just too cute.

We (the staff) stood on the side of the stage watching the show and when the 2 of them were on stage at the same time it was so loud and I knew we were all screaming/singing – but you couldn’t hear a thing! This is so dorky – but at one point, I looked around and caught myself in the best moment. Not even 10 feet in front of me are 2 of the biggest stars in the world performing, standing next to me were all my co-workers who I love, in the audience were some of my favorite people in the world – and for all ups and downs my year has had, personally and professionally – I was just straight-up over-the-moon happy at that moment, and I will always remember it.

As for the New Year that will be starting tomorrow…I know I want more of those moments. Every year, Fatty and I get in to the same argument. He says that people put too much pressure on this one particular day and that just because it’s a “new year” doesn’t mean that your slate is wiped clean.

While he is right, tomorrow symbolizes a jumping off point to make change. Do I think the way your night turns out will dictate your year? HELL NO! But there is something special about taking inventory on what life has thrown at you, good and bad, and making it better. I plan on dressing up, having lots of champagne (not driving of course) and dancing my ass off with 007, Fun Sarah, my friend Samantha and my neighbor Tommy – and of course everyone else at the party I’m going to. New Year’s day I’m off and will be spending the day with my family and Fatty…who is working and NYE and couldn’t hang with us cool kids.

Even though I’m all about lists…and have always been one to write at least 5 resolutions (your typical lose weight, save money, travel, etc)I only have one and I don’t need to write it down- I just want to enjoy my life.

The year started out with me letting my job work me, and ignoring my family and friends, only to be let go from my job, nearly losing my dad…and myself figuritively speaking. Knock on wood – every time a door closed a window opened – and some cases a giant ass wall fell down, and I ran the hell in!

I am surrounded by people (some old, some new) that believe in me and there is nothing more valuable than that. My family is healthy, my friends keep me grounded (and with cocktails), and my career is more than I ever could’ve imagined a year ago. For me not to enjoy all of that is ridiculous. I’ve worked and cried too hard to get there, so let’s pop the top already!

Wishing all of you a SAFE and happy New Year!!!

All My Love,
Bec

I hung up on Akon!

Posted in Random Thoughts at 6:58 am by Administrator

Yes, it’s true but not on purpose! I’ll explain in a sec!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Mine was nice. I ate waaaaay too much but it was all good. I’ve been working everyday since 11/29 so that has been my main priority (which I’m loving!) – but I have squeezed in a little fun.

Anyhow, back to Akon…
He had a new album come out the week of Thanksgiving, and a new clothing line so he was going to be in Chicago that Friday for a big launch party. He was scheduled to call in to the station for an interview but called late…when I was on…and I had no clue who it was initially.

He called one of the private lines, which staff normally calls or the techs for remotes – so I just answered it “Hello” like I always do. There was a lot of noise, no response, so I said “anyone there?” I heard an unfamiliar man’s voice say “Hey baby,” and then there was another long pause and I could hear a ton of people in the background. I said hello again, and this time I got a “What’s up baby it’s me” – to which I so eliquantly replied, “Me? Who the hell is this?” and got, “What’s up baby this is Akon – I’m calling for my interview but I’m a little late.” Sweet baby Jesus, I was just a rag to Akon! So now I feel like a gigantic tool and am fearing my career may be flashing before my eyes. I talked to him for a sec asking how he was, blah3, then asked if I could put him on hold to see if we could squeeze him in during my show, or if we were going to reschedule (which was really just my professional way of saying I had no clue was going on and I’m going to call my boss) – he was super nice and had the most distinctive voice…but being all flustered, instead of hitting the ‘hold’ button, I hung up on him! OMG I’m so done!

Julian was there (he did the morning show that day) and laughed his ass off at me because I just opened the studio door and screamed “Somebody!” He told me to just do the interview if he called back and assured me that I wouldn’t get in trouble for it. I ended up talking to one of my bosses and he laughed at me too and said to reschedule if he calls back. I told him that I was going to lie and say I was someone else if he did.

Low and behold, 20 minutes later Akon called and apologized to me saying he was sorry that his phone must’ve cut out. Nice! I told him the plan and he was all for it. I wished him luck with his new album and clothing line, he called me “baby” about 45 more times (so there was no need to disclose my identity), and that was it. Everybody lived happily ever after!

I text Joe (Cicero, formerly of “The Joe and Rebecca Show”) afterwards because the Akon song “Smack that” (as in smack that *ss) reminds me of him. When his Mom was still alive it was the ringtone he had for her which always cracked me up. There was no meaning to it (which is what made it funny), I think he just bought a bunch of ringtones when he got a new phone and had a leftover one and assigned it to her. I txt “I hung up on Akon today” and he responded “Did he want to smack that?” Good times.

Anyhow, other things going on (less dramatic), I need to play catch-up w/a lot of my friends. I’m gonna try to pull that off tonight. I’ve been so bad about returning calls lately! Maybe that Akon incident scarred me?!

I did talk to my bff Kanya yesterday. She and I have been playing phone tag since Thanksgiving. She’s coming home on 12/19 w/her husband Edgar. Big up to Kanya and Edgar! I miss them and wish they were closer to home.

I’m having dinner with the girls tomorrow night. There are suppose to be 8 of us (which cuts my call list down to 4- I’ll just catch up with them in person), but someone always punks out. Let’s hope I’m not that girl! Ha!

Alright, well my free nights and weekends are a callin!

Have a great week! Dress warm!

XOXO,
Bec
